About me
My name is Elena Rokhlina, and I am a certified teacher and researcher with experience in the fields of linguistics, language methodology, interpreting, translating and editing.
Teaching and supervision
Originally, I graduated from Saint-Petersburg State University with a spesialist degree in linguistics. And I have always been interested in studying languages, their development, processing, and analysis. Another area of my real professional interest has always been comparative linguistics, and consequently translation.
However, it has been impossible not to combine research work with teaching. My pedagogical training was done partly during my studies at the Faculty of Philology (both undergraduate and post-graduate). I also had some in service training on a part-time basis at Saint-Petersburg State University and at the British Council Resource Centre.
I have worked teaching Russian to foreign (undergraduate) students, English to undergraduate students in their higher education. Also I work as a teacher trainer giving a course “Preparation for Teaching Knowledge Test, Module3”.
Apart from that, for a number of years I have been teaching classes in Business English to students and corporate clients.
My pedagogical approach and philosophy are based on the three pillars: 1) the ideas about adult education which derived from Karl Rogers’ humanistic views; 2) principles of conscience raising approach in language methodology; 3) my personal strong belief that a university teacher should always be “up-to-date”.
Research
Following my dissertation, I have been interested in text studies, syntax and prosody relationships, and their influence on transforming written text into spoken (read aloud, quoted, etc.).
Second area I have been involved in for a number of years is concerned with designing syllabi and standards for CPD of university teachers and researchers (see Publications).
